Our Programs
Organic Food Gardening
GCP provides the materials, instruction, and volunteer labor to install organic food gardens for families and individuals in need, as well as schools and community centers. We offer ongoing support to help those who would otherwise lack access to healthy, affordable food grow their own organic produce. GCP supports its gardeners by providing each new gardener with a trained mentor for support throughout the year and by refurbishing gardens for two years.
Growing Healthy Kids (GHK)
GCP, Meals on Wheels and More, and Youth InterACTIVE have collaborated to design and publish a curriculum that teachers can use to supplement school gardening programs. This TEKS-appropriate curriculum teaches students about nutrition and healthy lifestyles through physically active lessons and games.
Education/Skills Workshops
GCP holds seasonal biointensive gardening skills workshops that teach participants how to double-dig, start seeds, compost, plan a garden, and more. We also offer educational materials and presentations to community groups and organizations.
GCP began holding Seeds-to-Starts workshops in 2006. At these hands-in workshops, participants learn how to prepare soil for seeds, how to plant seeds, and how to transfer seedling into starter pots. GCP uses the starter plants from these workshops in our gardens.
Austin Habitat for Humanity's Homeownership Education Program, a twice-yearly organic gardening workshop for new Habitat homeowners, also serves as outreach to potential new gardeners.
