Our History
In July 1998 a group of dedicated volunteers founded Green Corn Project (GCP). Our goal from the beginning was to offer people, especially those with financial or physical barriers, a way to learn about growing food at home with minimum cost and without chemicals.
Green Corn Project has built more than 130 organic food gardens in Austin's underserved neighborhoods with the assistance of dozens of volunteers, including our staff and board of directors. More than 80 percent of our first-time gardeners maintain their gardens for at least two seasons.
In the spring of 2007, GCP built 17 new gardens and refurbished more than 25 gardens from previous seasons with the help of more than 100 volunteers. We are happy to garden with the following partners:
- Heart House at Trails Vintage Creek
- El Buen Samaritano
- The Austin Discovery School
- The Texas Empowerment Academy
- American Youthworks
- Brooke Elementary School
- Many new individuals and families!
