Dig-In Leadership Training

The 2012 Spring Dig-In Leadership training date is set and registration is now open!

Dig-In Leaders are Green Corn Project's most valuable resource! They are the primary factor limiting the number of gardens we can install and refurbish each season. The more Dig-In Leaders we have, the more people we can help. We are always on the lookout for volunteers willing to take the next step and become Dig-In Leaders.

With that in mind, we look to schedule training days each Spring and Fall season to train new Dig-In Leaders.

2012 Spring Schedule

Dates: Saturday, March 10th (Register now)
Time: 8:30am - 1pm
Location: 1210 Rosewood Ave, Austin, TX 78702 (map and photo link)
More info: What to do on the day will help you best prepare.
Dig-In archive has blog entries, photos, and a map of gardens built.

No prior gardening experience is necessary. The workshop will train volunteers on all aspects of being a Dig-In Leader, from garden preparation and planting techniques to efficient management of volunteer groups. Those who attend a workshop will then get hands-on training shadowing experienced Dig-In Leaders during upcoming Dig-Ins. The goal is to have workshop volunteers ready to lead their own teams by the next Dig-In season.

Dig-In Leaders are asked to commit to leading a Dig-In team on at least one and preferably two days each fall and spring (of course, those wishing to lead more teams per season can usually be accommodated!).

If you are willing to make this commitment to Green Corn Project and our gardeners, please sign up by clicking on one of the dates above.

What to do on the Dig-In Leadership Training day

Before you leave the house

Please be sure to check the website and your e-mail both the night before and the morning of the Training, as it is possible that we may need to reschedule because of weather, ground conditions, or other reasons.

Please bring sun protection, shoes with sturdy soles (digging in flip flops is no fun), water or other beverages, gardening gloves if you use them, and snacks or lunch if you want them. We will provide all the necessary tools and instruction, you do not need any prior training.

Plan on staying till 1pm, although we may be able to finish a little before then.

When and where to meet up

We will meet at the Soma Vida building at 1210 Rosewood Avenue. Please arrive by 8:30am so that we can start the class promptly at 9am. We will assemble outside in the area behind the building.

There is not a sign out front that says "Green Corn Project", so look for the Soma Vida sign. This map and photo should help you find us.

If you come by car, please park in the surrounding neighborhood, not in the Soma Vida lot, and allow a little extra time in your schedule to find parking and then walk to Soma Vida. If you bicycle, there is a bicycle rack on the east side of the building you can lock your bike to. Please do not chain your bicycle to the entrance ramp rails at the front or back entrances of Soma Vida, as this can block access.

Trainee check-in

At Soma Vida, look for a person with a clipboard and please sign in. The first part of the workshop will be held at Soma Vida, but we will then travel to a garden site for a simulated Dig-In.

We encourage carpooling and ridesharing among volunteers, so please speak up on the day if you have extra room and are willing to help transport other volunteers, or if you would like a ride from a team member to the garden site.
